Energication for Renewable Energy Education
Jul 7th
The Ultimate Blogging Toolkit has been my repository for all things related to my new hobby, blogging. This will continue to be a place to share what I learn, but I also want to share the result of two other passions: renewable energy and education.
First, education.
For the last eight years, I’ve been a school board member. A lot of work, but a very rewarding experience.
Now, renewable energy.
As a self-proclaimed solar geek, I’m always looking for innovative and successful uses of solar technology. Taking a page from the school district’s math initiative, I put two and two together – and got Energication.
The combination of Renewable Energy and Education, “Energication” is my latest project bringing information of value to educators about renewable energy curriculum. My hope is that it will become a central topic in all schools across our nation. For now, I’m just happy our local district is interested in pursuing the concept.
Renewable energy is our future. Electricity will be the currency of that future. Through Energication and speaking in person to any school who will listen, I am looking forward to helping our students have some “spending money.”
The first effort is to pursue a working solar system and related curriculum through a grant application. You can read more about it on the site.

Go With What Got You There
Apr 26th
Somewhat of an off-topic post this time, but one that provides some balancing perspectives about yours truly. The Ultimate Blogging Toolkit is my way of sharing what I’m learning, as an average blogger, with other average bloggers. Usually, the topics are somewhat serious and an honest attempt is made at exploring them. Often, there’s a bit of humor that is enjoyed along the way.
Call it an alter ego, but more precisely, The New Blogged Word is a place on Google’s Blogger where this all began. Technically, there was a slightly different starting point, but I recently exported and imported that information into The NEW Blogged Word to align Google accounts.
Why am I sharing this? It’s important to remember that all our experiences adds to the body of blogging work that we develop. Blogger was a fine starting point for me and in fact, is a very lucrative and successful environment for many people. The seemless integration with Adsense (which has been enhanced recently) makes that a very nice one-two punch. My move to the WordPress platform was not a slight toward Blogger, but simply my way of experiencing a greater body of work – and learn more along the way.
Another reason for mentioning it is that it allows a reminder about staying true to your blog. Interjecting occasional humor in The Ultimate Blogging Toolkit is an extension of how I operate in business: serious about what I do, but have fun doing it. It would not be respectful to my readers if I strayed too far from that posture.
However, The New Blogged Word is just the opposite. That was the beginning. It has pictures of our Bathroom Remodel. It has my thoughts on my Countdown to Retirement. It even has my local area’s Memorable Merchants who have gone above and beyond in their operations. Just I would no sooner show a picture of my bathroom remodel on The Ultimate Blogging Toolkit, I will do everything I can to not get too serious on The New Blogged Word. To butcher an old saying, “There’s a topic for each blog, and each blog should stay on topic.”
Although I’ve added a tag for The New Blogged Word, this may be one of very few times where I pitch it’s merits. However, you never know when something there relates here and here there.

Step By Step is Here! (Sort of)
Apr 15th
Alright, it’s just the page with some introductory comments, accessible from the Step by Step tab in the header, but it is a start. One of the Getting Started topics that I will explore in more depth than some of my earlier posts will speak directly to this Step by Step start.
My world won’t let me devote long blocks of dedicated time to growing the Ultimate Blogging Toolkit. It is however, important to me to keep the process moving. For now, I’m relegated to a step by step approach.

Why Blog?
Feb 4th
One of the first questions a potential blogger needs to ask themselves is why become a blogger? The reasons can be as numerous and varied as the number of bloggers themselves. Just a few common examples:
- Keeping distant family members updated on what’s happening within your domesticated four walls
- Engaging potential and existing customers in a dialogue surrounding your product and/or the marking in which your product exists
- Allowing a team, club or other organization to have a 24/7 connection and sharing of information about their interests and activities
- Simply evaluating the merits of the best burgers! Sorry – just had to do it.
- You simply need to express yourself
Regardless of the reason, every web site, podcast or magazine article with which I come into contact strongly urges that you do it about a subject in which you are passionate! Passion will drive the success. Passion will cause a better final product. Passion will contribute to financial opportunities if that is your goal.
One perfect example of focusing that passion is Molly Lee Cards. Molly is a fellow blogger and and insanely creative designer who used to have a blog with family fun and an occasional reference to her greeting cards and invitations she sells on her Etsy.com site, which is an online marketplace for selling handmade items. I suggested to her that while I enjoy the family videos and photos, they distracted me when I visited to view her latest creation.
My thought was for her to split out the family fun into a new blog, allowing family members to keep up, but it would provide the appropriate focus needed for her cards. Not only has her site become more professional overnight, she has been transformed into constantly feeding the monster with a wonderful burst of energy, creativity and, from my perspective, head-shaking amazement, about her cards. I’m going to keep thinking that her increase in sales recently are due in part to that realignment. Don’t burst my bubble!
Born to Be Good – The Science of a Meaningful Life, by Dacher Keltner.
Mr. Keltner was interviewed on a podcast I enjoyed recently and was fascinated. He talked about how we can engineer our own “meaning” in our lives through the science behind human interactions that build rapport, relationships and happiness. Admittedly, this might be a stretch for a “Why Blog?” post, but here’s the point: passion can be found in a number of different areas of our lives. If you can’t find it, engineer it. But the critical piece is that you must find that passion. Without it, the juice behind the blog will be watered down at best. Your passion will be noticed in your blog. For more background, here’s a link to a New York Times article.
So why am I doing this?
My reason is simple: at some point in my life, I plan to retire. Retirement doesn’t mean a rocking chair and afghan. Nope. It means doing something new; something different. My goal is to learn enough about monetizing blogs so that I can put strategies in place to support my nasty golf habit during retirement. The way it’s looking though, blogging is starting to become my new nasty habit. Remember that passion thing?
Regardless of your reason for blogging, do it for the right reason. Take your time and identify your own personal reasons. I was fortunate enough to have a friend help me understand and identify mine.
Explore your passion.

First, if you are reading this, thank you for being patient. I appreciate every one of you who follow. I’ve been developing some other project ideas and I’m now in a position to move them forward – and the Ultimate Blogging Toolkit will be a part of them. Stay tuned.
Secondly, for those of you who have asked about a Free Blog Review, again, thank you for staying with me and yes, I will be conducting each and every one of them.
Again, thank you and look for some new concepts to be introduced as part of the Ultimate Blogging Toolkit. I’ve missed this interaction, but very excited to be bringing you fresh perspectives in the near future.
