Above the Fold Lists
Bloggers who pay attention to widgets from Adgitize and Entrecard have many reasons for doing so. One, of course is convenient “dropping.” We can debate the impacts on bounce rates vs. the exposure to new blogs. However, in this regard, the best blog real estate for any sort of advertising is “Above the Fold” on the opening screen without the need for scrolling.
With a new monitor used to maintain the Ultimate Blogging Toolkit comes the need to refresh the Above the Fold lists – and add a new one. To appear on the Ultimate Blogging Toolkit’s Above the Fold lists, the widget must be identifiable and clickable in the first 984 pixels on the screen. In the spirit of sharing the tools I’ve developed, this is what works for me. I hope it is beneficial to you.

Hint: When using Google Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer, hold down the CTRL key when clicking the links on the list. Each click will open a new tab but will keep you right on this page and allow you rapid clicking through the list. As the list gets longer, it will of course take time to load them all. However, this is a very efficient way to get many easy-to-drop blogs served up in tabs.

There seem to be many definations of above the fold. When I asked this the last time, several people checked my blog and said I was well above the fold, however you do scroll a bit to reach my ec. I was told, and have read above the fold means the half point?
Can you clearify. I see very few blogs in my visits, dropping etc that have the ec widget at the very top. Most have their ads there or profiles and have the 3c down a little so folks scroll to about the title of their post.

In most cases, “Above the Fold” means visible on the screen without scrolling. This is usually used in the Entrecard or Adgitize world when dropping cards. The idea is that to make it as easy as possible for visitors to do a quick drop, bloggers place the widget high enough on the page to prevent any scrolling. This has a secondary benefit as well, earning bloggers spots on “Above the Fold” lists on blogs that maintain them.
In my Above the Fold lists, I frequently have to review them to ensure the blogs still have widgets truly above the fold. Things change and it’s good to keep the lists fresh, or people won’t come back. Thanks for jogging my memory – I’m due again to check them out.

Different people have different concepts of just what “above the fold” or “above the crease” really means. Personally I define it in two ways: 1. That portion of a web page or blog that is visible upon loading, without scrolling down. 2.) everything above the 850 pixel mark.
The first definition is rather dependent on the users browser configuration and computer screen resolution. The second is a better measure I think, since it is in a quantifiable form.
I recently wrote a post about what should be above the crease on every blog. It is after all prime real estate.

Excellent thoughts. I agree with your comment and your post – on all fronts. Your point about a quantifiable piece of real estate makes the most sense. On my Entrecard and my Entrecard & Adgitize “Above the Fold” pages, I indicate my definition is on a 17 inch monitor at a resolution of 1024×768. That is consistent with your 850 pixel neighborhood.
